Indian Cinema is full of sports movies. Iqbal, Chak De, Sultan, Pan Singh Tomar, Bhag Milkha, Mary Kom are all the movies on the sports or the sports personalities.
Today is 14th March. Its birthday of Indian Movies Superstar Aamir Khan. That was the reason I thought of writing about him and how his movies helped the Indian sports to develop. He is best known for his movies on the sports like Lagan, Jo Jita Wohi Sikandar and Dangal.
These three films became popular as the climax in the sports tournaments was painted well. There are many other films which inspired the Indian sports lovers and in this article we will talk about them all. Another movie Dhoom 3 was also based on the gymnastics to a certain extent. In his film career Amir Khan inspired the fans of #Cricket, #Cycling, #Gymnastics and #Wrestling.
Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar
Meaning of this title – Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar is “One who wins is the King”. Aamir Khan played a cyclist in this movie which was released in 1992. The posters of this movie were very attractive. Pooja Bedi made headlines due to her Merlin Munroe posing in the movie. The movie was based on sports rivalry. The rivalry was showcased through the marquee ‘Annual Cycling Race’ to which Aamir Khan rightfully lays claim at the climax. More than the song, final cycling race became the attraction of the movie.
Lagaan
The word Lagaan literally means tax in Hindi. This movie made to the hearts of the public in the Year 2001 . Almost after a decade Aamir Khan chose to do a movie on any sport. The sports involved in this movie was Cricket but year in this movie is 1893. India is under British occupation in those days. In a small village, the tyrannical Captain Russell imposes an unprecedented land tax on its citizens. And outraged and rebellious farmer, rallies the villagers to publicly oppose the tax. Russell offers a novel way to settle the dispute. He challenges villagers to a game of cricket, a sport completely foreign to India. Aamir Khan, the captain of village team wins the match in a dramatical manner and then tax gets waived off.
Dhoom 3
Not exactly based on the sports, but the circus entertainer who robs a corrupt bank in Chicago in order to avenge his father’s death. However, his troubles increase when Inspector Jai and Ali suspect him of the robbery. Aamir Khan was shown as Acrobat Expert in the movie.
Dangal
Dangal literally means the Riot. This movie hit the theaters in the year 216. Dangal, even before its release, became a hit with the audience, celebs and critics. Mahavir Singh Phogat, a former wrestler, decides to fulfil his dream of winning a gold medal for his country by training his daughters for the Commonwealth Games despite the existing social stigmas.
In these films Aamir Khan is successful in narrating the extraordinary tale of triumph against all odds. On screen he narrates the real life struggle of these characters.
