China’s First Commercial Spacecraft Launch Site in Hainan Ready for Operations

China announced operational readiness for the country’s first commercial spacecraft launch site in south China’s Hainan. Celebrating a milestone of its emerging commercial space industry. This declaration comes after a successful simulation rehearsal for a rocket launch using its two newly completed launch pads.

According to the Hainan International Commercial Aerospace Launch Co., Ltd. (HICAL), Kaleida tests entitled it to confirm. That some exercises had critical tests like water spraying, a deluge system cooling test, and a rocket lifting arm erection test. The launch infrastructure’s functionality and related safety were verified through important tests.  HICAL President Yang Tianliang mentioned that cooperative efforts with satellite and rocket developers were very important. In preparation for the site’s inaugural launch mission.

HICAL’s Launch Site: Establishment and Investment

HICAL was established in June 2022 and involves the Hainan provincial government. The China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation. And the China Satellite Network Group Co., Ltd. It is situated at an estimated offshore investment of about 4 billion yuan (about 560 million U.S. dollars) off the city of Wenchang.

It has a launch area, TT&C building, rocket assembly buildings, spacecraft testing and integration facilities, fuel storage facilities, and varieties of other buildings and amenities. The latitude of the site is 20 degrees north. Which gives the low latitude advantage by increasing the rocket payload capacity and decreasing launch costs.

Advantages of Coastal Area Launch Site

Compared with inland launch sites, the advantages of coastal launch sites lie mainly in convenience and safety. This is a critical consideration for commercial launch services. Since large rockets can be shipped to the site by sea vessels. Further facilitating these operations, Hainan’s provincial government is also planning a new, purpose-built port.

Moreover, the coastal location also aids in retrieving the reusable rockets after launching. HICAL is also testing vertical landings and sea recovery of rockets with other commercial rocket developers. A technology that could determine cost and efficiency for the commercial space industry.

Launch Pads and Capabilities

The launch site dimension has two launch pads that are specifically designed to launch liquid propellant rockets. And another two that are designed for solid propellant rockets. The No.1 and No.2 launch pads, completed in December 2023 and June 2024. Respectively, can carry out a wide variety of launch tasks. No.1 will be exclusively used for the new generation of China’s medium-lift carrier rockets. Whereas No.2 will be universal, being able to take aboard any rocket with different diameters from commercial rocket companies. Each of them has a capacity that attains as high as 16 launches per year.

The diversified applications of refueling and supply of major propellants in its propellant and gas supply system. At the site make provision for liquid oxygen, liquid hydrogen, kerosene, and methane. All such exigencies of infrastructure in one single location make it possible to justify supporting a long list of commercial launch requirements. Thus making HICAL crucial for the market of global commercial space launches.

Future Prospects

Not only does HICAL concern itself with domestic launches. But it also seeks to establish supporting services for international commercial launches. The vice director of the technical department at HICAL, Xiang Dalin, said the company has a plan to publicize. A universal interface file of commercial rocket designs among its domestic and international clients. This will likely standardize and push commercial launch services. Forward at an international level.

The fact that the commercial space industry is, for the first time, featured in this year’s Chinese government. Work report speaks volumes about its rise in profile. One can see that it has been tagged as one of the “emerging industries and future-oriented industries,”. Whose development and cultivation the government pledged to undertake.

Growth at Full Throttle

According to the 2023 China aerospace science and technology blue book. A total of 26 commercial launches were conducted in 2023, accounting for 39 percent of the total. Since 2015, China’s commercial space market. Has grown very rapidly at an average annual growth rate of over 20 percent from 2017 to 2024. It will reach about 2.34 trillion yuan in 2024.

HICAL marked the eve of China’s first launch mission. And further strengthened its position vis-à-vis the global commercial space industry. Although the Hainan launch site was functioning with the help of the HICAL. A whole new chapter has started for Chinese space efforts. Holding immense promise for the years ahead.
