Japanese beer giant Asahi confirms cyberattack halts shipping and ordering in Japan temporarily

Japanese beer giant Asahi has confirmed a cyber attack that has disrupted its operations across Japan. While the company reassures that no personal or customer data has been lost, ordering and shipping systems have been suspended, creating significant operational challenges.

Cyber Attack Hits Japan Operations Hard

Asahi, one of Japan’s largest brewers, reported that a cyber attack has caused major disruption to its domestic operations. The company stated that it is actively investigating the cause of the attack. At the moment, there is no clear timeline for when normal operations will resume.

“This system failure is limited to our operations in Japan,” the company said. The attack has not affected any of Asahi’s manufacturing operations in Europe, including its UK beer supply. This means that beer production and supply outside Japan remain normal.

Despite the disruption, Asahi confirmed that no personal or customer data was compromised. The breach mainly affected the company’s ordering and shipping systems. These services have been temporarily suspended as the company works to restore them.

Asahi has not identified the hacker or hacker group responsible for the attack. No one has claimed responsibility for the incident.

Global Brewing Giant, Local Impact

Asahi is a major international brewing company with a wide footprint. Its brands include Grolsch, Peroni, and Carlton & United Breweries in Melbourne. Even with its international presence, roughly half of its sales come from Japan, which makes this cyber attack particularly significant for the company.

How Cyber Attacks on Industrial Control Systems Can Endanger Lives ?

The company employs around 30,000 people worldwide. While operations outside Japan are unaffected, employees and partners within Japan are dealing with the consequences of the cyber disruption.

Industry experts say cyber attacks on major companies are increasingly common. Large companies, especially those with digital operations for orders and logistics, can face serious operational interruptions even without personal data being stolen.

Company Response and Statement

Asahi emphasized that it is taking immediate steps to investigate the incident and restore operations as quickly as possible. The company is working closely with authorities and cybersecurity specialists to identify the source of the attack and ensure the integrity of its systems.

Customers and business partners have been notified about the temporary suspension of ordering and shipping. Asahi urged patience while the company resolves the disruption.

The cyber attack highlights the growing threat of digital security issues for large corporations, even those with international operations. By confirming that personal and customer information remains safe, Asahi aims to reassure consumers and partners.

Despite the challenges, the company’s beer production outside Japan continues without interruption. However, the suspension of its domestic ordering and shipping operations could affect beer deliveries in Japan for an unknown period.

This cyber attack serves as a reminder that digital systems are vulnerable, and even global brands like Asahi can be affected. The company continues to prioritize both operational recovery and data security.
