Trump defends Susie Wiles as MAGA base accuses her of sabotaging the ‘America First’ agenda

A storm has formed inside the MAGA movement after a rough week for President Donald Trump, and much of the frustration is now aimed at his chief of staff, Susie Wiles, often called the president’s “Ice Maiden”. Wiles has long been known as a disciplined and powerful strategist inside Trump’s world. She played key roles in the 2016, 2020, and 2024 campaigns and became the first woman to serve as White House chief of staff after Trump’s 2024 victory over Kamala Harris.

But several of Trump’s longtime supporters are blaming Wiles for what they see as a series of missteps. Far-right commentator Ann Vandersteel shared a pointed message on social media, telling Wiles that the “MAGA ship is sailing” without her. Lawyer Robert Barnes added to the criticism, accusing her of bringing “swampy” decisions into the White House. Other users online demanded she be removed, saying she was harming the movement and blocking voices they believe represent “America First”, including adviser Stephen Miller.

Trump has remained loyal to Wiles. He has called her “universally admired and respected” and once described her as “the most powerful person in the world.” Still, the backlash this week marks the sharpest anger directed at her since she entered the West Wing.

A Tough Week Leads to Growing Blame

The uproar began after Democrats scored major victories in off-year elections, which many voters linked to cost-of-living struggles. According to a senior operative quoted by the Daily Beast, the reaction inside Trump’s circle was that the week had been “a s–t-show”. Tensions rose when Trump responded to the election results by calling affordability concerns a “hoax” and claimed prices had fallen under his administration, even though many families say they are still struggling.

More frustration surfaced when Trump reacted slowly to newly released Jeffrey Epstein emails. Supporters felt his answers lacked clarity. The situation worsened when the president dismissed concerns about Chinese students taking college slots that some in the movement believe should go to Americans. In an interview with Laura Ingraham, Trump insisted that he knew what MAGA wanted “better than anyone else”, which upset some of his base.

By the next day, anger intensified when Trump defended allowing high-skilled foreign workers into the country. When Ingraham argued that too many foreign workers could lower American wages, Trump said the U.S. lacked certain kinds of talent. When pushed again, he repeated, “No you don’t,” which shocked supporters who believed he had always emphasized American workers first.

After these remarks, many inside the movement turned their frustration toward Wiles, claiming she was shaping the messaging and allowing ideas that moved away from the “America First” agenda. Some wrote that advisers connected to her were influencing domestic policy in ways that weakened the message.

Internal Battles and Rising Tensions

Wiles has been a controversial figure inside Trump’s orbit for some time. ABC journalist Jonathan Karl, in his book Retribution, described how Linda McMahon and Brooke Rollins tried to derail her appointment as chief of staff before Trump met with Wiles at Mar-a-Lago on November 7, 2024. Staffers who previously worked with Wiles helped delay McMahon and Rollins, even arranging contact with JD Vance to slow them down. Both later joined the administration as cabinet secretaries, but the behind-the-scenes struggle highlighted the divisions surrounding Wiles.

This week’s backlash shows how those divisions have grown. Many MAGA supporters openly demanded Wiles be removed, saying she was causing “unspeakable damage”. The White House and Wiles have not commented, even as pressure continues to build around Trump’s inner circle.
