‘Mahabharat’ Star Pankaj Dheer Passes Away at 68 After Cancer Battle

Mumbai, 15 October 2025 Veteran television and film actor Pankaj Dheer, widely known for his unforgettable portrayal of Karna in B.R. Chopra’s Mahabharat and as Shivdutt in the fantasy saga Chandrakanta, has passed away at the age of 68. He died today after a long and tough battle with cancer.

“He passed away due to cancer this morning. He had been in and out of the hospital in the past months,” confirmed his friend and producer Ashoke Pandit to the press.

His cremation is scheduled for later in the day in Vile Parle (W), Mumbai at the Pawan Hans crematorium, as confirmed by CINTAA (Cine & TV Artistes’ Association).

A Beloved Actor’s Journey

Pankaj Dheer was born in Punjab and began acting in the 1980s, initially playing small roles in films.His breakthrough came in 1988, when he was cast as Karna in B.R. Chopra’s television adaptation of the Mahabharat. That role made him a household name.

Following Mahabharat, he took on a variety of roles in both films and television. Some notable films include Sadak, Sanam Bewafa, Aashik Awara, Soldier, Baadshah, Andaz, Zameen, and Tarzan.

From 1994 to 1996, he starred in the TV series Chandrakanta, based loosely on Devaki Nandan Khatri’s 1888 novel. Dheer played King Shivdutt of the fictional kingdom Chunargarh, a role that further cemented his popularity.

Later in his career, Dheer also appeared in many popular TV soaps such as Teen Bahuraaniyaan, Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat, and Sasural Simar Ka.

He also held positions in industry bodies. He was a former General Secretary of CINTAA and a former Chairman of the CINTAA Trust.

Final Days and Legacy

In the months leading to his death, Dheer’s health had been deteriorating. Sources report that his cancer had relapsed after earlier treatment and surgery.

His son, actor Nikitin Dheer, posted a poignant message hours before his father’s demise:

“Whatever comes, let it come. Whatever stays, let it stay. Whatever goes, let it go. As a Shiva Bhakt, say ‘Shivarpanam’ and move on! … very hard to do.”

At the funeral, many from the film and television community gathered to pay their respects. Names like Salman Khan, Sidharth Malhotra, past co-actors from Mahabharat, and representatives from CINTAA and FWICE were present.

His co-stars also expressed grief. Mahabharat actor Feroz Khan, who played Arjun, shared a video tribute, saying he would always miss Dheer. Mahabharat actor Puneet Issar (Duryodhan) called it a personal loss, saying, “I have lost my brother today.” Pankaj Dheer is survived by his wife Anita Dheer and son Nikitin Dheer (who is married to actress Kratika Sengar).

His passing has left a deep void in Indian television and film. On social media and among fans, his role as Karna still evokes strong memories and admiration.
