Trump’s pardon of Santos sparks GOP infighting — Greene and Johnson trade blows in public feud

A loud argument has erupted inside the MAGA movement, showing how divided some of its biggest names have become. The fight began over former Congressman George Santos, who was caught lying and later convicted of fraud. The drama unfolded just hours before a major twist — President Donald Trump decided to shorten Santos’ prison time.

Two of the most well-known MAGA figures, House Speaker Mike Johnson and Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, started trading barbs in public. Greene, who once stood firmly with the MAGA camp but has recently begun to criticize some of its leaders, accused Johnson of being responsible for Santos’ removal from Congress.

The feud began when Greene told a news outlet that Johnson was the one who expelled Santos, saying he “oversaw” the process that pushed him out of the House. But Johnson quickly fired back, saying the accusation was completely false. He insisted that he had actually voted against kicking Santos out and even encouraged others to do the same.

“I try not to react to what Marjorie Taylor Greene says every day,” Johnson said when asked about her comments. “I don’t know what she’s talking about.”

This short comment sparked a day-long social media storm. Supporters of both sides began arguing online, showing how easily tension spreads inside a movement that once prided itself on loyalty and unity.

Political Firestorm: Speaker Mike Johnson alleges Trump was FBI informant after Epstein expulsion

The Fallen Congressman at the Center of It All

George Santos was once seen as a rising star in the Republican Party. He gained fame during his campaign by sharing an impressive life story. But soon after being elected, reporters and investigators discovered that many of his claims were false.

Santos was later charged and convicted of stealing money from donors and lying about his campaign finances. His fall from grace became one of the biggest political scandals in recent memory. Eventually, the House of Representatives voted to expel him — something that rarely happens.

After being sentenced to more than seven years in prison, Santos began serving his time earlier this year. Just before heading to prison, he complained online that Speaker Mike Johnson had “blocked” a possible pardon from President Donald Trump. But legal experts quickly noted that the Speaker had no authority to block or allow a presidential pardon.

Despite all the controversy, Johnson said he spoke to Santos personally about “redemption” and “grace”. He also mentioned that Santos once posted kind words about him on social media, calling him “a great friend”.

The feud between Johnson and Greene came to light just as President Trump took a dramatic step. He issued an official order to commute Santos’ sentence, meaning the former congressman would not have to serve the rest of his prison term. This action changed everything — the argument about who caused his downfall suddenly didn’t matter anymore.

Chaos Before the Commute

The argument didn’t stop at the topic of the expelled lawmaker. Marjorie Taylor Greene also criticized Mike Johnson for not handling other issues inside Congress. She complained that there had been no plan to deal with certain tax credits expiring, calling Johnson’s leadership “unprepared”.

Johnson chose not to respond to those points directly. Instead, he repeated that he did not remove Santos and that the record clearly showed his vote against expulsion.

As the feud played out, many people online pointed out that the argument seemed unnecessary. Hours later, when President Trump announced he had commuted the sentence, the entire debate looked even more pointless.

The feud revealed a deeper problem inside the movement that once stood united behind Trump. It showed how quickly former allies can turn on each other — even over a figure whose political career was already over.

By the end of the day, both politicians were standing firm on their claims. Johnson continued to deny the accusation. Greene stood by her statement. Meanwhile, George Santos walked free, thanks to President Trump’s decision.

The drama left many wondering why top members of the MAGA movement were fighting over something that no longer mattered. Yet, for much of the day, their battle dominated political conversations online, proving that in politics, personal rivalries can sometimes steal the spotlight from real issues.
