Newly released legal records linked to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein have drawn renewed public attention to his past associations with several high-profile figures. The release of these documents by the US Department of Justice has sparked fresh discussions and emotional reactions, particularly after philanthropist Melinda French Gates spoke about how the issue connects to her former marriage with Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates.
The documents contain emails and materials that mention Bill Gates among many well-known individuals who were part of Epstein’s extended social and professional network. Melinda French Gates addressed the issue during an appearance on NPR’s Wild Card podcast, where she spoke about the personal impact of seeing her ex-husband’s name appear in the newly released records.
Melinda French Gates Describes “Painful Times” in Marriage
Melinda French Gates said that the resurfacing of Epstein-related allegations has been emotionally difficult for her. During the NPR Wild Card podcast interview, she explained that hearing new information connected to Bill Gates reminds her of painful experiences during the final years of their marriage. She described feeling “unbelievable sadness” when the topic returns to public discussion.
Melinda French Gates and Bill Gates divorced in 2021 after 27 years of marriage. She stated during the interview that she is happy to have moved forward with her life and described her separation as a step away from troubling circumstances. She also emphasized that questions connected to Epstein and the allegations are not hers to answer.
She said that the responsibility to respond lies with the individuals named in the records, including her former husband. Melinda French Gates also expressed sympathy for the victims connected to Epstein’s crimes and stated that she does not know all the details related to the allegations mentioned in the documents.
Emails and Allegations in Justice Department Files
The US Department of Justice recently released more than three million pages of documents connected to Jeffrey Epstein. Among these files are two emails dated 18 July 2013 that appear to have been written by Epstein. Both emails were sent from Epstein’s email account and returned to the same account. There is no visible confirmation that they were ever sent to Bill Gates or anyone else, and the emails remain unsigned.
One email appears to be written as a resignation letter linked to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The message includes claims that Epstein arranged medical treatment related to alleged personal conduct by Bill Gates. Another email, which begins with the words “dear Bill,” makes further accusations. It claims that Bill Gates attempted to hide a sexually transmitted disease and suggests that he tried to conceal the issue from Melinda French Gates.
A spokesperson representing Bill Gates has strongly denied these allegations. The spokesperson described the claims as “absolutely absurd” and said they came from a proven and disgruntled liar. The spokesperson also stated that the documents mainly reflect Epstein’s frustration over not maintaining an ongoing relationship with Bill Gates.
Bill Gates has not been accused of any wrongdoing by Epstein’s victims. Authorities have clarified that being named in the documents does not indicate criminal involvement or illegal activity.
Past Connections Between Bill Gates and Jeffrey Epstein
Bill Gates has previously acknowledged meeting Jeffrey Epstein on several occasions. He has stated that the meetings were related to discussions about possible philanthropic work. According to Bill Gates, those discussions did not lead to any actual partnership or project. He has also said that his interactions with Epstein were limited to a few dinners.
Reports from US media have suggested that Melinda French Gates had expressed concern about Bill Gates’ association with Epstein before their separation. Following the public announcement of their divorce, Bill Gates acknowledged that he had an affair with a Microsoft employee in 2019. The admission gained public attention and contributed to discussions about their separation.

The documents released by the Justice Department also provide insight into Epstein’s wider network. The files include references to several celebrities, business leaders, and global figures. Reports indicate that some individuals remained in contact with Epstein even after his 2008 conviction for soliciting sex from a 14-year-old girl.
Jeffrey Epstein died in 2019 while in custody at a New York jail. He was awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges at the time of his death. Since then, investigations and document releases have continued to reveal details about his social connections and activities.
During her podcast appearance, Melinda French Gates reiterated that she is focused on her personal and professional responsibilities. She repeated that questions related to Epstein and the allegations should be answered by those directly involved.
