Key points
- No single tool shows AI visibility. Combine four sources: AI crawler visits in server logs, citation reports, referral traffic from AI assistants, and regular manual checks.
- Bing Webmaster Tools added an AI Performance report in February 2026 showing how often a site is cited in Copilot and Bing AI answers. Google includes AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic in normal Search Console totals without separating it.
- Track trends over months, not individual answers, because AI responses vary from one query to the next.
If you cannot measure AI visibility, you cannot tell whether any of the work in this series is paying off. Measurement is still immature, but there are four sources of evidence worth combining. This article is part of our AI search visibility guide.
1. AI crawler visits
Your server logs record every visit from AI crawlers, identified by user agents such as GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot and PerplexityBot. Grouping them by purpose tells you different things:
- Search indexers show that your pages are being added to AI search indexes.
- User-triggered fetches, such as ChatGPT-User or Claude-User, show that an assistant opened your page to answer a real person’s question. This is the closest thing to a citation you can see in logs.
- Training crawlers show interest from model developers but say little about visibility.
Our guide to AI crawlers explains which bot does what. One caution: if your host serves cached pages, some bot visits never reach your site’s software and are missed by plugins that count them.
2. Citation reports
On 10 February 2026 Microsoft launched an AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools. It shows how often a site is cited in Microsoft Copilot, Bing’s AI summaries and some partner integrations, which pages are cited, and sample “grounding queries” that led to citations. It does not show clicks or how much a page contributed to an answer (Search Engine Land).
Google does not offer an equivalent. It counts traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode within the overall “Web” figures in Search Console’s Performance report, without separating it (Google Search Central).
3. Referral traffic from AI assistants
When a reader clicks a link in an AI answer, your analytics can usually see where they came from. In Google Analytics or a similar tool, filter referrals for domains such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, claude.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com, and create a channel group for them. Expect the numbers to be small: AI answers often satisfy the reader without a click.
4. Manual checks
Keep a fixed list of 20 to 30 questions your site should be a source for, and ask them in ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot once a month. Record whether your site is cited, which page and which competitor appears instead. Answers vary between sessions, so look for trends rather than reacting to a single result.
Putting it together
| Question | Where to look |
|---|---|
| Can AI systems reach my site? | Crawler visits in logs; robots.txt and firewall settings |
| Are my pages being indexed for AI search? | Visits from search indexers such as OAI-SearchBot and Claude-SearchBot |
| Am I being used in answers? | User-triggered fetches; Bing AI Performance; manual checks |
| Is it sending readers? | Referrals from AI assistant domains in analytics |
A worked example
NI Geovanta, the WordPress plugin we use, groups AI visits into these categories and reports visitors arriving from AI assistants. For the 30 days to 22 October 2026, Newsinterpretation recorded about 25,800 training-crawler visits, about 7,500 AI search indexer visits and 132 user-triggered fetches, but no recorded visitors from AI assistants. The honest reading is that AI systems read the site but rarely send readers to it yet. That is the baseline against which we will measure the changes described in this series.
Frequently asked questions
How can I see if ChatGPT cites my website?
Look for ChatGPT-User visits in your server logs, which show ChatGPT opening your pages to answer users, check referral traffic from chatgpt.com in analytics, and test relevant questions in ChatGPT manually.
Does Google Search Console show AI Overviews traffic?
It includes AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic in the overall Web search figures, but does not report it separately.
What is the Bing AI Performance report?
A report in Bing Webmaster Tools, launched in February 2026, that shows how often a site is cited in Microsoft Copilot, Bing AI summaries and some partner integrations, which pages are cited and sample grounding queries.
Why do AI crawler counts differ between tools?
Tools that run inside WordPress miss requests answered by a server page cache, and some bots do not identify themselves, so counts should be treated as minimums.
