Bond Interpretation: methodology and sources

Current data as of 27 Oct 2026.

Bond Interpretation publishes one page per Indian bond issuer. The pages bring together public records about the issuer and its bonds, with the source and date of each fact. They are compiled automatically from the sources below and reviewed by editors; they are information, not investment advice or a credit opinion.

Sources for each field

How bonds are matched to issuers

An Indian ISIN's first seven characters identify its issuer. Each issuer code gets one page. When NSDL records two issuer codes under the same Corporate Identification Number (CIN), for example after a merger or a change of name, they are shown on one page and the second page redirects to it. Former names recorded by NSDL are shown so searches for an old name find the company.

Terms used on the pages

Outstanding
An ISIN whose maturity date has not passed, according to the depository record. It does not confirm that the bond has not been redeemed early, called or bought back.
Matured
An ISIN on record whose maturity date has passed. Counted separately and not listed in the bond table.
Traded on
The exchanges where the bond has been reported as traded. A bond that has not traded can still be outstanding.
Private placement
A bond issued to a limited group of investors, as listed by BSE, with its disclosure documents.
Issue size
The amount the bond raised when issued, as recorded by NSDL. It is not the amount outstanding today and not the company's total debt. An outstanding amount is shown only where it has been verified.
Cumulative
A bond that pays no periodic coupon; the contractual return is payable at maturity. The page shows that amount and the yearly rate worked out from it.
Secured, guarantee
NSDL's classification. What the security is, the asset cover and the terms of any guarantee or co-obligor are in the offer document and the debenture trust deed; the pages do not infer them.
Interest frequency
As recorded by NSDL. Never inferred: when NSDL has no frequency, none is shown.

Credit ratings and their dates

For each agency the page shows the highest current rating on the issuer's outstanding bonds, its outlook, the latest rating action and the action date, the number of bonds it covers, and the date the record was last checked on NSDL. Ratings NSDL marks as not verified, and actions more than 15 months old, are labelled. Earlier actions are listed as rating history, separate from the current rating. Where an editor has summarised an agency's rating rationale, it is attributed to the agency and linked to its press release.

When sources disagree

  • Bond terms: NSDL's instrument record is preferred to the exchange files.
  • Values entered or corrected by an editor are kept when the data is refreshed.
  • Where no source gives a value, the field is left blank rather than estimated.
  • The summary, the bond table and the questions and answers on each page are generated from the same stored facts, so they cannot contradict one another.

How often the data is refreshed

  • Exchange lists and private placements: every trading day.
  • Ratings on NSDL: each ISIN is re-checked every 7 days, and new ISINs as they appear.
  • Bond terms on NSDL: each ISIN is re-checked every 90 days, and new ISINs as they appear.
  • Pages: updated from the stored data in one run, so every page, count and industry figure shows the same "Data as of" date. A page's modified date and its sitemap date change only when its facts change.

Automated and editorial content

The overview, bond table, ratings, placements and questions and answers are generated from the data. "Analysis by Riskpro", "Points to check" and rating rationale summaries are written by editors and labelled as such.

What the pages do not publish

Prices, yields and trading volumes of individual bonds; recommendations to buy, sell or hold; and credit opinions of our own. For prices and yields, see BSE and NSE.
