Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) has claimed that President Donald Trump prevented Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (MTG) from running for a U.S. Senate seat in Georgia, an action she says sparked Greene’s so-called “revenge tour” against fellow Republicans.
Speaking to her followers during an Instagram Live session, Ocasio-Cortez said Greene had been preparing to enter the 2026 Senate race to challenge Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff, but her plan was shut down by Trump and his team.
“Marjorie Taylor Greene wanted to run for Senate in Georgia,” AOC said. “She wanted to be the Republican nominee. She was getting ready for that race, and Trump said no. His team closed the door on her ambitions, and she’s been on a revenge tour ever since.”
The statement spread quickly across social media, drawing attention because Greene is one of Trump’s most visible allies in Congress. The idea that the president may have personally discouraged her Senate run has stirred conversation about growing divisions inside the GOP.
Greene Opted Out of Senate Run in May
Back in May, Greene publicly stated she would not challenge Jon Ossoff for his seat, which will be up for election in 2026. In a message posted on X, formerly Twitter, she explained that she believed Washington’s problems went beyond individual lawmakers.
“Even with a few good Republicans in the Senate, nothing changes,” she wrote. “So no, Jon Ossoff isn’t the real problem. He’s just a vote, a pawn, no different than the Uniparty Republicans who skip key votes to attend fundraisers and let our agenda fail.”
Her announcement ended speculation about a possible Senate campaign. However, according to AOC’s recent claim, Greene’s decision may not have been entirely voluntary. The congresswoman from New York said Trump’s political advisers wanted to manage the Georgia race carefully and pushed her to stay in the House.
Since then, Greene has become increasingly outspoken toward her own party. She has criticized Republican leaders over their handling of government spending, health care policy, and the ongoing budget standoff. These remarks stand out because her party currently controls both Congress and the White House under President Trump.
Greene Defends Trump but Criticizes GOP Leadership
Marjorie Taylor Greene has also taken positions that set her apart from many Republicans, especially on foreign policy. She has described Israel’s military actions in Gaza as a “genocide” and a “humanitarian crisis,” remarks that have drawn attention and some pushback within her party.
Despite the tensions, Greene says her relationship with Donald Trump remains strong. Appearing on ABC’s “The View,” she said, “I do love him,” adding that when she first ran for Congress in 2020, she campaigned against both parties because she comes from a working-class background.
She has also warned that Republicans risk losing control of the House if inflation and living costs remain high. Speaking with Semafor, she said voters will go into the next elections thinking about their finances above all else.
“I can’t see into the future,” Greene said, “but I see Republicans losing the House if Americans are still living paycheck to paycheck.”
Neither Trump nor Greene has directly responded to Ocasio-Cortez’s statement, but her comments have reignited debate about power dynamics within the Republican Party and the influence Trump continues to wield over his allies.
