Key points
- AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot answer questions by retrieving web pages and citing some of them. Being one of the cited sources is the new form of search visibility.
- There is no special switch for it. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode have no extra requirements beyond normal search eligibility; the basics are crawl access, clear and well-sourced content, and a consistent identity.
- Visibility has three layers: AI systems must be able to reach your pages, understand them, and trust them enough to cite them. Each layer can be checked and measured.
- This guide links to six detailed articles, one for each part of the work.
For twenty years, being found online meant ranking on a search results page. Increasingly, people ask an AI assistant instead, and the assistant reads several web pages, writes an answer and cites a few of them. If your page is not among those sources, you are invisible to that reader, however well you rank.
This guide explains how that process works and what a publisher can actually control. It is written for editors and site owners rather than engineers, and it is the hub for a series of six detailed articles listed below.
How AI assistants find and cite web pages
When an AI assistant answers a question that needs current or specific information, it usually does three things. It searches an index of web pages, which it or a partner search engine has built by crawling the web. It fetches and reads the most promising pages. Then it writes an answer and links to the pages it relied on.
Each AI company runs its own crawlers for these jobs, and most separate them by purpose: one for building a search index, one for fetching a page when a user asks, and often a third for collecting training data. OpenAI, for example, uses OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search, ChatGPT-User for user-requested visits and GPTBot for training (OpenAI). That separation matters, because a site can allow one and block another.
The three layers of AI visibility
1. Access: can AI systems reach your pages?
If your robots.txt file, firewall or hosting blocks AI crawlers, your pages cannot be indexed or read. Many sites block them by accident, through default security settings. Start with our guide to AI crawlers, which lists the main crawlers and what each one is used for.
2. Understanding: can they read and interpret your content?
AI systems work best with pages whose main text is easy to extract: clear headings, a direct answer near the top, facts stated plainly, and structured data that matches what is on the page. Our guide to structured data explains which markup helps and which is overrated, and our explainer on llms.txt covers the much-discussed file that may or may not be read.
3. Trust: will they cite you?
AI systems prefer sources that look reliable: content with named, verifiable authors, inline citations to primary sources, specific facts and figures, and a publisher whose identity is consistent across the web. Research led by Princeton University found that adding citations, quotations and statistics to content increased its visibility in generative engine answers by up to 40% (Aggarwal et al., GEO). Our article on generative engine optimisation explains what that research means in practice and how it differs from SEO.
What Google says
Google’s guidance for its AI features is deliberately plain: “There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.” It adds that there is no special structured data to add (Google Search Central). In other words, the foundations of good SEO still apply. What changes is that being cited, not just ranked, becomes the goal.
Measuring AI visibility
Measurement is still immature. Google counts AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic inside normal Search Console figures, and Microsoft’s Bing Webmaster Tools added a report of citations in Copilot and Bing AI answers in February 2026. Server logs show which AI crawlers visit and what they read. Our guide to measuring AI citations explains how to combine these sources.
A worked example: Newsinterpretation
We use our own site as a test case. Newsinterpretation uses NI Geovanta, an AI visibility plugin for WordPress developed by Newsinterpretation, to log AI crawler visits and score content. In the 30 days to 22 October 2026 it recorded about 25,800 visits from AI training crawlers, about 7,500 from AI search indexers and 132 visits in which an AI assistant opened a page to answer someone’s question, but no recorded visitors arriving from an AI assistant. AI systems are reading the site; the work now is to become a source they cite and that readers click. More about NI Geovanta.
Why this matters for news publishers
For publishers the stakes are higher than for most websites, because AI answers can replace the click. A Pew Research Center analysis of US users’ browsing found they clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits when Google showed an AI summary, compared with 15% when it did not (The Register, reporting Pew). Our article on AI search and news publishing in India looks at what this means for Indian publishers.

Frequently asked questions
How do I get my website cited by ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity?
Make sure their search crawlers can reach your pages, write content that answers questions directly with specific facts and inline sources, name verifiable authors, and keep your organisation’s identity consistent across the web. There is no paid or technical shortcut.
Is AI search visibility different from SEO?
It builds on SEO. Pages still need to be crawlable and indexed, but the goal shifts from ranking to being selected and cited as a source in an AI-written answer.
Does Google require special markup for AI Overviews?
No. Google says there are no additional requirements or special structured data for AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond being eligible to appear in Search with a snippet.
How can I tell if AI systems are reading my site?
Server logs or a crawler analytics tool show visits from AI crawlers such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot. Bing Webmaster Tools reports citations in Copilot and Bing AI answers.
