Houthis Claim Missile Attack on US Aircraft Carrier: What’s Really Happening?

The Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen claim they targeted the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69), a US Navy nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, with a missile attack in the Red Sea. This announcement follows the carrier’s reported return to the Red Sea from the Eastern Mediterranean and after airstrikes launched from Eisenhower hit targets in Yemen. Yahya Saree, the Houthis’ military spokesperson, said this attack was in retaliation for US and UK military operations in Yemen, which allegedly caused casualties among both combatants and civilians.

Concerns About Attack on US Aircraft

The Houthis’ claim of successfully launching a missile attack raises serious concerns due to the escalating conflict and the Red Sea’s importance as a major shipping route. The US and UK forces had targeted Houthi-controlled positions to counter the group’s anti-shipping activities and drone attacks. The UK Ministry of Defence identified facilities near Hudaydah as command centres for the Houthis’ maritime attacks. Despite these actions, the Houthis’ claim suggests they are capable of directly challenging a significant US military asset.

US Defense Officials’ Response

US defence officials dismiss the Houthis’ claims. They state that there is no evidence to support the reports of the Eisenhower being hit. A US defence official told Media that no missiles were fired at the Eisenhower, and the carrier strike group, including the USS Gravely, Mason, and the cruiser Philippine Sea, can counter missile and drone threats from a distance. The US Navy has not confirmed any such incident, and officials remain sceptical about the likelihood of the Houthis’ attack reaching Eisenhower.

Context of the Houthi Claims

The Houthis’ unverified claims reflect ongoing propaganda within the broader Yemen conflict. The group has a history of attacking shipping vessels, with the US Maritime Administration reporting over 50 incidents since November. The recent downing of a US MQ-9 Reaper drone by the Houthis adds to the tensions between the Iranian-aligned group and the US-UK-backed coalition forces.

Role of the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower

The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, part of the 5th Fleet’s operations, plays a crucial role in maintaining maritime security and stability in the Middle East. The vessel’s long service history, including involvement in the 1980 Iran hostage crisis, highlights the US’s commitment to having a strong military presence in key global areas.
