Queen’s University Faces Fierce Backlash Over Epstein Ties as Union Demands Immediate Action

University Faces Pressure Over Controversial Links

Queen’s University Belfast (QUB) is under pressure to cut ties with people linked to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The University and College Union (UCU) in Northern Ireland, representing most university staff, has called on QUB to act quickly and publicly.

The union specifically asked the university to suspend its connection with the current chancellor Hillary Clinton and former chancellor George Mitchell. This comes after a released letter in which the former chancellor described his friendship with Epstein as “a blessing.” The letter dates back to 2003.

The UCU said the suspension should be done as a precaution. They emphasized that a university chancellor is an honorary figure who represents the institution’s values and promotes its activities to both local and international communities.

The union said: “While we do not cast aspersions upon individuals, given the nature of Epstein’s appalling crimes, the university’s leadership should, as a precautionary measure, suspend links with known associates of Epstein.”

QUB acknowledged the union’s statement but said it would not make further public comment at this time.

Concerns About Reputation and Public Image

Epstein was charged in 2019 with sex trafficking of minors and other crimes. He died by suicide in jail that same year. His death sparked questions about how he died and his connections with powerful figures.

Recently, a congressional committee in the United States sent legal summonses to high-profile individuals, including the current chancellor and her husband. The committee wants information about Epstein’s business and personal connections.

The union stressed that failing to act could damage the university’s reputation. They specifically mentioned that the work and name of a university center could be at risk. The center, established in 2016, focuses on global peace, security, and justice. It is named after the former chancellor.

The union warned that any continued association with Epstein’s network could harm student recruitment and the public image of the university.

Background on the Former Chancellor

The former chancellor is a well-known political figure who played a key role in peace efforts in Northern Ireland. He helped lead the talks that resulted in the Good Friday Agreement, ending decades of conflict in the region.

After the release of the 2003 letter, the former chancellor said he deeply regrets having known Epstein. He stated that at the time, he was unaware of Epstein’s crimes. The chancellor also confirmed that he had no contact with Epstein after learning about his illegal actions through published reports.

A U.S. congressional panel released the letter, reportedly including it in a book given to Epstein for his 50th birthday.

The Clinton Foundation has been contacted for comment regarding the current chancellor. Meanwhile, QUB remains silent beyond acknowledging the union’s request.
