Betting Scandal Rocks Britain’s Elections

The ongoing Betting scandal has further damaged trust in the Conservative Party, which was already facing low public confidence.

Betting in Britain

Betting is a popular pastime in Britain. A lot of people bet on the horses racing in the Grand National. Others bet on England winning the Euro 24 football tournament. Some even place high-risk bets on the exact score of a football match, like when Arsenal plays Spurs.

The betting market is very advanced and profitable for the companies taking the bets, not the people placing them. You can bet on almost anything. For example, you can bet on whether London will have snow on Christmas Day, with odds of 8 to 1 (an 11% chance). You can also bet on India winning the 2026 football World Cup, with odds of 4,500 to 1 (a 0.02% chance). There’s even a bet on NASA confirming alien life on Earth before the end of the year, with odds of 900 to 1 (a 0.1% chance).

Betting Ethics

This betting mania has extended to politics. If you wanted to bet on the Labor Party winning next week’s UK general election, you’d find it’s almost a sure thing, with odds of 25 to 1 on (a 96% chance). If you think Boris Johnson will return to lead the Conservative Party, the odds are 40 to 1 (a 2% chance).

There are limits to betting. Professional footballers can’t bet on games, whether they are playing or not, as it could look like they might influence the game. Any footballer breaking these rules faces strong punishment. Illegal betting syndicates and bribed players have cast a shadow over international cricket from time to time.

In politics, betting with secret information to get an unfair advantage is wrong. It is most probably breaking the law as well.

The Betting Scandal

Some well known Conservatives had placed bets just before the general election results were declared. This suggests they used secret information. Last month, Rishi Sunak announced that the UK general election would be held early, on July 4th. This news surprised his party and many others. But a small group already knew the secret.

The day before the election date was announced, many people suddenly bet on a July election. The odds were about 5 to 1 (you could bet £100 and win £600). The Gambling Commission, which regulates betting, got worried and started an investigation.

Revelations

Even those with a low opinion of politicians’ integrity were shocked by what was uncovered. A Conservative MP, close to the prime minister, placed a large bet on a July election date. When confronted, he admitted it was a “huge error of judgment.” Another Conservative candidate also placed a bet. Her husband, the Conservative Party’s head of campaigns, was put on special leave. The party’s data head was also involved in placing many small bets on a July election date to avoid attention but still win thousands of pounds.

It didn’t stop there. The London police said one of their officers, who protects the prime minister, was arrested for betting on a July election. Several other police officers were also suspected. The prime minister’s office might have told the police about the election date a day or two before it was public. This was for planning, not for betting.

Political Consequences

The Gambling Commission has not finished its investigation, and none of those involved have admitted to a crime. For more than a week, Sunak used this as an excuse for not taking action against the two candidates. He declared he was “incredibly angry” about the alleged bets and that anyone found guilty would be expelled from the party. However, he suggested it was best to let the inquiry finish.

Due to public outcry, Sunak has now changed his stance. Without waiting for the inquiry’s outcome, he said the two candidates no longer have the Conservative Party’s support, though it’s too late to stop them from standing. The poorly-handled scandal has further damaged trust in a party that was already struggling.

One small consolation for Sunak is that the country had already turned against him and his party. The betting scandal will not change the outcome of next week’s election but will likely affect the scale of his defeat.
