The streaming television world may be heading into another shake-up. Fox Corporation has warned that millions of viewers who watch its shows, news, and live sports through YouTube TV may soon lose access. The warning comes as both sides struggle to renew their carriage deal, which is set to expire on Wednesday at 5 p.m. ET.
If no new agreement is reached, subscribers to YouTube TV could face a blackout of several popular Fox-owned networks and local channels. That means some of the biggest events of the fall season, including NFL games, college football matchups, and Major League Baseball, may not be available to those relying on the platform.
Fox stated that it is ready to reach a “fair agreement” but accused Google, the parent company of YouTube TV, of taking advantage of its dominant position in the market. The company claimed that Google’s terms do not reflect what other providers typically pay for the same type of content.
On the other side, YouTube TV said Fox is asking for significantly higher fees than other networks with comparable content. The platform stressed that it wants to keep Fox’s channels but only if the deal is balanced and does not lead to higher costs for subscribers.

YouTube TV currently offers access to a wide range of Fox content. This includes the main Fox broadcast network, Fox Sports, FS1, FS2, Big Ten Network, Fox Deportes, Fox News Channel, and local Fox stations in many cities.

If the current deal expires without a new agreement, all of these could be removed from YouTube TV. The timing could not be worse for sports fans. NFL games, especially those on Sunday afternoons, air on local Fox stations. Even though YouTube TV has the NFL Sunday Ticket package, those games would still be blacked out if they are carried in local markets.
College football, which is in full swing, could also be affected. Fans of the Big Ten Network, a Fox-owned channel, would lose access to its coverage. In addition, Major League Baseball games broadcast by Fox are at risk, which is especially concerning as the postseason excitement builds.
Beyond sports, Fox’s entertainment and news programming is also in question. That includes hit TV shows, primetime events, and the 24-hour news channel. Local stations owned by Fox provide news and weather updates that communities rely on daily. Losing all of this in one move would be a big shift for viewers who depend on YouTube TV as their main source of television.
Statements From Both Sides
Fox issued a strong message, saying it is disappointed in Google’s approach to negotiations. According to the company, Google has been exploiting its influence in the marketplace by pushing terms that are “out of step” with the rest of the industry. Fox urged YouTube TV to engage in meaningful talks to avoid disrupting millions of viewers.

YouTube TV responded with its own update through a blog post. It said that financial demands are “far higher” than what it pays other partners for similar offerings. The company explained that its goal is to strike a deal that reflects the true value of Fox content while protecting subscribers from extra costs.
In an effort to soften the potential impact, YouTube TV has promised subscribers a $10 credit if the blackout happens. At the same time, Fox highlighted that viewers still have the option of subscribing directly to Fox’s newly launched streaming service, Fox One, if they want to maintain access to the company’s programming.
This standoff is not the first for YouTube TV. Earlier this year, Paramount channels such as CBS, Nickelodeon, and Comedy Central were also at risk of being removed. That dispute ended with a last-minute deal, allowing channels to remain available while also expanding the relationship to include Paramount+ with Showtime and BET+ on YouTube’s platform.
Why This Matters
With more than 8 million subscribers, YouTube TV is one of the biggest live TV streaming services in the country. It ranks fourth among all pay TV operators, behind only Charter Communications, Comcast, and DirecTV. Importantly, it is the largest virtual multichannel video programming distributor, also known as vMVPD.
Because of this large audience, any blackout involving Fox could affect millions of households. The dispute not only impacts sports fans but also families who rely on Fox’s entertainment lineup and communities that watch their local Fox stations.
Both companies have made it clear that they value their partnership. Still, if no agreement is reached before the deadline, the blackout could begin as soon as Wednesday evening.
