X-ed Out: Elon Musk’s Platform Faces European Backlash, User Losses Mount to 11 Million

Elon Musk’s social media platform, X once known as Twitter has lost millions of European users . In just six months, the platform saw a drop of more than 10% in its European user base. This means that about 11 million people in Europe have stopped using X.

Back in August last year, X had around 105 million users in Europe. Now, that number has dropped to 95 million. Countries like France, Poland, and Germany have seen the biggest declines. France alone lost 2.7 million users. Poland dropped by 1.8 million, and Germany followed with 1.3 million users gone.

Some of the smaller European countries saw even bigger changes, when measured by percentage. Lithuania and Luxembourg, for example, lost about a quarter of all their users. This is a big deal for a platform that once had strong global reach.

These numbers came directly from X itself. The company had to release this information to follow the European Union’s strict technology rules, known as the Digital Services Act. This law requires big platforms like X to be honest about their user numbers and to take action against harmful content.

Elon Musk&’s X on the Hook: EU Eyes Historic $1 Billion Fine for Misinformation

Why Are People Leaving?

Many people believe that the way X has changed since Elon Musk took over is the reason behind this sharp decline. Musk bought X in 2022 and made several major changes to how the platform works. These changes have not been welcomed by everyone.

One of the biggest concerns is that the platform now allows more harmful and misleading content to spread. Critics have said that hate speech and false information have become more common on X. Some say that this is because the rules for what can be posted were loosened after Musk became the owner.

Shock Charge! Musk’s Tesla Zapped by Trump’s Tariff Storm

Because of this, a lot of groups, organizations, and even cities have decided to stop using X. For example, the city of Paris left the platform earlier this year. Other well-known groups, such as universities and major media outlets, have also stopped using X.

The European Union is keeping a close eye on the platform. Since 2023, it has been looking into whether X is following the rules about removing illegal content and stopping the spread of false news. In July, EU officials said that the platform had broken the law, though no official punishment has been given yet.

Not Just X: Trouble for Tesla Too

Elon Musk is not only the owner of X. He also runs Tesla, the electric car company. But Tesla has also been facing problems in Europe.

In the first two months of this year January and February — Tesla’s car sales dropped by more than 50% across Europe. That is a steep decline for a company that once led the electric vehicle market in many parts of the continent.

Peter Navarro Accuses Elon Musk of ‘Selfish’ Stand Against U.S. Trade Tariffs

So, while X is losing users online, Tesla is losing customers on the roads. These two big hits suggest that Musk’s influence in Europe is facing serious challenges.

The sharp decline in X’s European users, along with falling Tesla sales, shows that people in Europe are making strong choices about the products and platforms they support. The numbers released by X paint a clear picture: millions have walked away, and the trend has caught the attention of lawmakers and regular users alike.
