Michigan police respond to church shooting and fire that killed at least four people

Attack on a Day of Worship

A quiet Sunday morning in Grand Blanc, Michigan, turned into a scene of horror when a visitor to a local church attacked worshippers during their service. The congregation had gathered for a special service that encourages fasting, charity, and reflection. Instead of peace, they faced gunfire, flames, and chaos.

Witnesses said the attacker drove a pickup truck into the front of the church before setting the building on fire. He then opened fire on people inside and outside the chapel. Many were still seated after the first part of the service when the noise of the crash and gunfire shook the hall. Panic spread quickly as worshippers rushed to protect children and help the older people out of the building.

The peaceful service became a desperate struggle for survival within minutes. Survivors recalled hearing a loud bang as the doors burst open, followed by the terrifying sound of gunfire. People tried to flee through the smoke and confusion while some stayed back to shield others.

Shooting, Fire, and Rescue Efforts

Authorities said the attacker used an assault-style weapon to fire several rounds at worshippers. In the parking lot, some people tried to get others to safety in their cars. Several were injured while attempting to drive away. Despite the confusion, many church members focused on protecting children and helping the injured escape the blaze.

Police officers responded to the emergency call within seconds. As the attacker tried to flee, officers confronted him in the parking lot. A shootout followed, and the suspect was killed less than ten minutes after the first call was made.

As gunfire ended, first responders shifted their focus to rescuing victims and battling the growing fire. Thick smoke filled the air as flames spread rapidly through the church building. Firefighters worked for hours to control the blaze while police secured the area and set up a reunification center nearby. Survivors embraced one another as they waited for news about their loved ones.

Authorities said several people were killed in the attack, while others were taken to hospitals with injuries. At least eight people were wounded, and more remained unaccounted for late Sunday. Emergency workers continued searching the burned structure to locate possible victims trapped inside.

A Community in Shock

The red brick chapel on McCandlish Road, once a familiar landmark with its tall white spire, is now destroyed. The building, surrounded by a lawn and parking lot, had stood for years as a place of worship and community gatherings. By the end of the day, the church was declared a total loss.

Neighbors reported hearing gunshots and seeing smoke rise from the building. Many described the event as unreal, saying they had never imagined such violence could strike their quiet area. Some residents even ran from nearby streets to try to help as fire and police crews rushed in.

Authorities confirmed that the fire was deliberately set, and evidence of accelerants was found at the scene. Investigators also reported discovering suspected explosive devices inside the debris, which added to the scale of the emergency response.

The devastating attack came just one day after the death of the church’s worldwide leader, adding to the sorrow felt by members. The day meant for fasting, prayer, and acts of charity instead turned into one of grief, shock, and loss.

The once-welcoming building, with its doors always open to visitors, now stands in ruins. Debris has replaced pews, and smoke has scarred the sky where the spire once pointed upward. For the local community, the memory of that Sunday morning will remain one of the darkest chapters in their history.
