A U.S. senator “Maggie Hassan” has raised serious concerns over the use of SpaceX’s Starlink internet service by international scam groups in Southeast Asia.
Starlink Allegedly Powering Online Scams Targeting Americans
These criminal networks are reportedly using the satellite-based internet to run large-scale online fraud operations, targeting unsuspecting people in the United States.
Several countries, including Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos, host these scams. Criminals in these regions run “scam compounds,” where they force people to work in fake online schemes. These illegal centers have reportedly tricked Americans out of billions of dollars.
According to U.S. authorities, Starlink is being used to power these fraud centers. The satellite internet service allows criminals to run their scams even in remote areas where traditional internet services don’t work. These areas, such as the border between Thailand and Myanmar, have become major hubs for illegal online activities.
Victims Forced to Run Online Scams
Thousands of people are being trafficked into scam centers. Many are lured with fake job offers. Once there, they are forced to work in bad conditions. They have to send fake messages, emails, and voice calls. Most of these scams target people in the U.S.
Local authorities have cut off normal communication and internet services in some of these areas. But criminals use Starlink satellite dishes to stay connected and continue their illegal operations.
Thailand has taken steps to stop the scams. Since February, officials have cut off electricity, internet, and fuel in some areas near the Myanmar border. This includes the Myawaddy region. These actions aim to break the supply lines of the scam centers. They are trying to make it harder for the scams to continue.
Senator Calls for Action Against Starlink Misuse
A U.S. senator sent a strong letter to SpaceX. The senator asked Elon Musk to stop criminals from using Starlink for fraud. SpaceX has rules to cut off service for illegal use. But scammers in Southeast Asia are still using the system.
The letter warned that people in the U.S. are receiving more scam calls, texts, and emails than ever before. What they may not know is that some of these messages are coming from faraway scam centers using high-speed Starlink internet.
The senator stressed that Starlink should not be helping criminals carry out fraud, even if it is unintentional. The company was asked to do more to prevent abuse of its service and protect people from online scams.
These scam operations have also gained international attention following several high-profile incidents. One such case involved the kidnapping of a Chinese actor in Thailand earlier this year. He was later rescued in Myanmar, where he had been taken to a scam compound.
So far, SpaceX has not issued a public response to the senator’s letter. The situation remains under watch as pressure builds on the company to take strong steps against the misuse of its powerful satellite internet system.
