Maldives Entry Ban Spurs Israeli Tourists to Explore India’s Beaches

On June 3rd, the Israeli Embassy in India advised its citizens to explore Indian beaches, including those in Lakshadweep, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Kerala, and Goa. Maldives has recently prohibited entry for Israeli passport holders. The ban was implemented due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which has heightened tensions in the region. It’s worth noting that Maldives heavily relies on tourism as a key driver of its economy, making this decision significant. Despite Maldives’ allure as a beach paradise, Israelis are currently barred from visiting the country during this sensitive period.

Israelis not welcome in Maldives

On Sunday, Maldives declared its ban on Israeli passport holders entering the country. This decision was announced by the Maldives Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihsaan in a press conference at the President’s office. This was also annothe Cabinet’s decision to amend necessary laws.

Additionally Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, is going to appoint a special envoy to evaluate the needs of Palestinians. A fundraising campaign called “Maldivians in Solidarity with Palestine” is launched to provide help and assistance to the Palestinian refugees. The campaign will be executed with the help of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees. This decision of the Maldives government was in the background of the ongoing Israel-Hamas war which started on 7 October 2023 in Gaza.

The Israeli foreign ministry has issued an advisory for its citizens and has discouraged them from visiting Maldives. Israel had also issued a travel warning in December with the anti-Israel sentiments prevailing in Maldives. Israel and Maldives do not share any diplomatic ties since its suspension in the year 1974. Around 10,000 Israeli tourists had visited Maldives in the year 2023.

Explore Indian Beaches

The Israeli Embassy in India suggests the beautiful and serene beaches of India. It welcomes Israeli tourists in India. This will prove to be a golden opportunity for the Indian tourism sector and would also provide a good income source to the island territories of India. This might definitely give a boost to the local economy of these tourist places in India.

The tourism opportunities in Lakshadweep are much more than Maldives. In January Indian PM posted on social media asking Indian citizens to explore Indian beaches. This post was controversial. Maldives Ministers comments were discriminatory.

Kobbi Shoshani, consul general of the Israeli Consulate in Mumbai, also reacted to this post, encouraging Israelis to visit Indian Beaches. He posted that, “Thanks to the Maldives Government’s decision Israelis can now explore the beautiful beaches of #Lakshadweep.

Fostering diplomatic ties and Economic Growth

This decision would impact India-Israel relations proving to be a major soft power factor in their developing ties. This will promote cultural exchange between citizens fostering better and stronger diplomatic ties. A cultural sensitivity between Indians and Israelis can help in minimizing instances of cultural misunderstandings. As Israeli tourists have a high spending power, their influx will create job opportunities and stimulate economic growth. Israel’s recommendation will help India diversify its tourist places by giving attention to the lesser known tourist spots. This will promote sustainable tourism development in India.

The diplomatic ties between India and Israel will strengthen with such initiatives by actively encouraging people- to- people connect. Certainly this recommendation by the Israeli Embassy shows the goodwill between the two nations.
