Former Shohei Ohtani’s Interpreter Ippei Mizuhara Admits Guilt

Ippei Mizuhara, the former interpreter for Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani, has pled guilty to defrauding the renowned pitcher-outfielder of $17 million to settle his sports betting debts, as indicated by court documents. This revelation has shocked the baseball community, tarnishing Mizuhara’s reputation as a steadfast companion to Ohtani at ballparks nationwide. Mizuhara entered his guilty plea at the U.S. District Court in Santa Ana, California.

Background Of Mizuhara Case

For several years, Mizuhara exploited his close professional association with Ohtani. On occasions, he even impersonated Ohtani to bankers, siphoning millions from Ohtani’s account. Prosecutors unveiled these allegations after Mizuhara signed a plea agreement on May 5. Mizuhara avoided the media as he exited the court building. The court session lasted approximately 45 minutes, with federal prosecutors planning a subsequent news conference.

Over $142 million in winning bets were placed by Mizuhara, who deposited the money into his account. Simultaneously, he incurred gambling losses amounting to $183 million, leading to a net loss of nearly $41 million. Importantly, he never placed bets on baseball. He pled guilty to one count of bank fraud and one count of subscribing to a false tax return. The maximum term for the bank fraud charge is thirty years in federal prison. The maximum sentence for the false tax return count is three years.

They have scheduled the sentencing for October 25. They also expect Mizuhara to pay restitution to Ohtani, potentially up to $17 million. He is expected to pay over $1 million to the IRS. They could adjust these figures before sentencing.

More about Mizuhara’s scam:

Hired initially as an English-Japanese translator for Ohtani, Mizuhara assisted with contract negotiations involving financial advisors. Ohtani did not speak English, and the financial advisors did not speak Japanese. In 2018, Mizuhara helped Ohtani open a bank account in Phoenix to receive his payroll. Mizuhara subsequently compromised the account’s login information. As Mizuhara’s gambling losses escalated, he defaulted on his debts. He manipulated the account’s contact information to reroute communications to himself. Mizuhara conducted unauthorized wire transfers amounting to over $16 million until 2024.

Prosecutors negotiated with Mizuhara, who then pleaded guilty. They had not yet arraigned him in federal court in Los Angeles by mid-May. Initially, he was charged with a single count of bank fraud. Authorities stated there is no evidence suggesting Ohtani’s involvement. They also found no evidence of Ohtani’s knowledge of Mizuhara’s betting activities. Ohtani cooperated fully during the investigation. Mizuhara was arrested in late March, leading to his dismissal by the Dodgers and prompting an independent investigation by Major League Baseball (MLB). MLB rules strictly prohibit players and team personnel from engaging in sports betting and illegal or offshore gambling activities.

Investigation probe in Mizuhara case

After conducting a thorough federal investigation and unchallenged criminal proceedings, authorities confirmed that Mizuhara defrauded Ohtani, without any wrongdoing on Ohtani’s part. MLB officially absolved Ohtani in a statement. Despite the scandal, Ohtani remained focused on his career. He notably hit a home run shortly after Mizuhara’s court appearance in April. Later, against San Diego, Ohtani hit home run No. 175. This tied Hideki Matsui’s record for most home runs by a player of Japanese descent.

Reflections:

Mizuhara’s court proceedings coincided with MLB’s announcement of a lifetime ban for Tucupita Marcano. Marcano, a San Diego Padres infielder, was linked to a separate gambling scandal. He became the first active player in a century to receive such a ban.

Mizuhara’s actions and guilty plea tell a noteworthy and sobering story in professional sports. This case brings home the serious consequences of engaging in improper gambling behavior, illustrating how such actions can result in reputational damage, financial ruin, and legal issues. It reminds professionals and athletes alike to give the highest priority to moral behavior. The case emphasizes the significance of upholding integrity and diligence to preserve the sport’s reputation. By reiterating that they will not accept misconduct and will impose severe consequences, this circumstance serves as a deterrent to others.
